Welcome to melbournemetro.org, an independent guide to Melbourne’s metropolitan train network, run by Metro Trains Melbourne under Public Transport Victoria (PTV). The network has 16 suburban lines and 227 stations spanning about 405 km — from Belgrave and Lilydale in the east to Werribee and Sunbury in the west, and from Mernda and Craigieburn in the north to Frankston, Cranbourne and Pakenham in the south-east.
Since the Metro Tunnel opened, the Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines run straight through five new underground stations in the city, while the City Loop still serves the eastern, northern and Clifton Hill lines. Metro Trains Melbourne runs 16 suburban lines (plus the Flemington Racecourse special-events line) serving 227 stations. They are grouped by colour on the network map: the Burnley group (navy), the Metro Tunnel lines (light blue), the cross-city green and pink lines, the Northern group (yellow) and the Clifton Hill group (red).
First trains run from around 5:00 am and last trains around midnight from Sunday to Thursday. On Friday and Saturday nights the Night Network keeps trains running all night, roughly every 60 minutes.
The whole metropolitan network is a single flat fare zone. A 2-hour fare is $5.70 (full fare) and the daily cap is $11.40, with a lower cap on weekends. Children under 5 travel free.
myki is Victoria’s reusable smartcard. Touch on before you board and touch off when you finish and the correct fare is deducted (and capped automatically). You can also use Mobile myki on Android, and contactless bank-card payment is rolling out from 2026.
The Metro Tunnel is a new cross-city rail line with five underground stations — Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac. The Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines now run through it instead of the City Loop.
The free PTV app shows live departures, plans journeys door-to-door and sends service alerts for the whole network.
