Night Network and special services

Night Network

Friday & Saturday nights

On Friday and Saturday nights, trains run all night on every metropolitan line about every 60 minutes (Stony Point and the Flemington Racecourse line excepted). After about 1 am, trains run direct to and from Flinders Street.

Major events & the MCG

AFL, cricket & concerts

Extra services run for big events at the MCG, Marvel Stadium and Flemington. Trains can get very busy around Richmond, Jolimont and Southern Cross before and after games.

New Year & public holidays

Free & extended late services

Metro runs extended or free late-night services for New Year’s Eve and some public holidays, and a Sunday-style timetable on most public holidays.

Planned works

Buses replace trains

On some weekends, sections of a line close for maintenance or level-crossing removals and buses replace trains. These are announced in advance on the PTV app and at stations.

Practical tips

  • Check before you travel: use the PTV app for live departures, platforms and disruptions, and add this site to your favourites.
  • City Loop vs Metro Tunnel: the Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines use the Metro Tunnel (Town Hall, State Library, Parkville, Arden, Anzac); most other lines use the City Loop (Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, Parliament).
  • Avoid the crush: the busiest times are 7:30–9:00 am and 4:30–6:00 pm on weekdays into and out of the city.
  • To the airport: there is no direct airport train yet — take the SkyBus coach from Southern Cross, or a bus/train combination via Broadmeadows or Sunshine.
  • Touch on & off: always touch your myki on at the start and off at the end so you are charged the correct (capped) fare.

Frequently asked questions

Not every night. Trains generally run from about 5:00 am to midnight Sunday to Thursday. On Friday and Saturday nights the Night Network runs all night, roughly every 60 minutes on each line.

Weekday mornings around 7–9 am and afternoons around 4–6 pm. Outside these times the network is much quieter and frequencies stretch out to every 10–20 minutes.

There is no airport train line yet. The quickest option is the SkyBus coach from Southern Cross Station; you can also combine a train to Broadmeadows or Sunshine with an airport bus.

Most public holidays run a Sunday timetable, and some (like New Year’s Eve) have free or extended late-night services. Always check the PTV app for the exact times.

On weeknights the last trains leave the city around midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights you can travel any time thanks to the Night Network. Check the PTV app for your specific line.
